Why would you use a home server?

Buying a new processor on Ebay is a matter of a couple of tens of dollars, buying a second cooler can be more difficult and more expensive. Anything that can be used in a desktop gaming computer will cost more due to higher demand. In used server equipment, the basic principle is that only what a private owner does not need in a home computer will be cheap. Towers are rare, lots of rack mount get dumped at scrap price.

In our webshop we offer new server racks and patch racks which are often cheaper and at least as good as a used network cabinet of a high end brand. This has saved my a$$ several times in case of a hardware failure.

Something else to note is that you generally have a tight window in which to collect the item. I’ve never had an issue buying hardware from either Shpock or Preloved, it’s always worked as described. Occasionally, you’ll find a real non-techie seller and they’ll just list it as “a computer server”, with no specs or anything. Sometime a couple will divorce and the wife will just list her ex’s server for sale with no mention of CPU, RAM, HDDs. As you can see, there’s more than a single place to find your dream server.

Small form factor drives are usually much more expensive than large form factor ones and they typically have lower total storage capacities. It is important to note that most Solid-State Drives are usually SFF; however, LFF SSDs do exist. In deciding on the server that you will be purchasing, it is important to know whether you’ll be needing SFF or LFF drives since the server chassis can usually accommodate just one of the two.

Hi, I am considering buying the used server of someone with these specs for 550$ canadian. First of all, is it a good deal or am I paying too much. Also the main use of the server would be minecraft and other game servers for me and my friends, running and running a mail server in the background. I guess it’s part of the reason that I suggest that, if you’re looking for an upgrade, think about buying things that might be older, but could potentially have extra value for you.

This helps make sure that useless hardware is actually recycled and not just put into landfill. The rest of the server hardware is super expensive though so it just sits unused. I would suggest that you look at building a system yourself, as you'll find a lot of the older servers online will consume a decent amount of power.

While it is against the game’s ToS to play on a private server, there isn’t much of a way to enforce it. This is because when you host your own server, the owners of the game can’t regulate what happens. Surplus auctions have been around forever, often in the context of military or higher education, and quite often, these auctions aren’t always heavily promoted to the public. And sometimes, it allows people to get a real deal on a machine that is no longer particularly valuable to its original owner.

Over the years I’ve successfully found servers from all of these sources. If I’m searching for a particular model or generation of server then I must admit, eBay is my go-to choice. Nowhere else really has the variety of used hardware that eBay does.

Nobody knows how that hardware was treated, what types of conditions it was exposed to, or how long it's been in use. There's obviously a much higher risk of a hardware component failing, such as fans or power supplies. If I were buying for a larger company that requires a high uptime production environment, I would not buy used for this reason. The number of cores basically corresponds to the number of virtual machines that you can run on a given server.
